JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
Once upon a time, there was a poor woman. She lived with her son,Jack. They were so poor that often Jack went to bed without dinner. At last things got so bad,Jack’s mother made up her mind to sell the cow. It was the one thing they had left. So,when the market day came,Jack set out. He took the cow with him.
On the way he met a man with a bag of beans. Jack liked the beans. Jack asked the man to give the beans.
“I can’t give them to you. But,I might to sell them,”said the man.
“I don’t have any money. But my mother has sent me to market to sell the cow. come with me,if I have sold the cow,I’ll give you half,”said Jack.
“No!”said the man. These are magic beans. You’ll have them if you give me the cow.”
Jack said yes. Then,Jack ran home to show the bean to her mother. His mother cried when she heard the story. She was very angry and threw the beans out of the window.
Jack went to bed very upset at night. But,in the morning he was very surprised to find something in front of his window. It look like a huge tree. He went near and found a tall beanstalk. Indeed, the top of the stalk was almost out of sight.
Jack jumped on to the beanstalk. Higher and higher. Still higher Jack climbed. At last he reached the top. He found him self in a strange country. He walked along a little way. Then he met an old woman. Jack had never seen her before, but his surprised she said,”I know you quite well,Jack. Years ago,a wicked ogre killed you father. He took all the money which should be yours. This ogre lives close by. If you want to punish the him I can help you.”
Jack said that he did want to punish the ogre.“Where does he live?”he asked.
“In that castle over there,”said the woman. And with that she disappeared.
So jack made his way to the castle. He climbed the steps and rang the bell. A woman open the door. Jack asked for a roomfor the night.
“Oh,No!”said the woman. “I can not take you in. My husband is an ogre. If he finds you here,he will kill and eat you.”
“But can’t you hide me?”asked Jack
“I will do my best,”said the woman. “But you must go away first thing in the morning.”
Jack promised. So she took him into the kitchen and gave him a good meal. Then there came a great knock at the door.
“Quick!”cried the woman. “Jump into the oven. Don’t make a sound until my husband has gone to bed.”
A few minute later the ogre came into the room. In a teribbly loud voice he said, “Fee,fi,fo,fum! I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive or be he dead,I’ll grind the bones to be my bread.”
Jack was very afraid. But the wife said,”Don’t be silly,my dear. See what a nice dinner I made.”
The dinner was so good that the ogre sat down and ate it all up. Then he told his wife to bring his favourite hen. After that the woman went outside and come back with a beautiful hen. She put it on the table.
“Lay an egg,”said the ogre. The hen laid a golden egg.
“What a useful bird!”thought Jack.
He looked through a crack in the oven door.
Soon after this ogre fell asleep. Jack heared the snores of the ogre,he came out of his hiding place. He picked up the hen and ran away. He ran and ran until he reached the beanstalk. Then he climbed down as fast as he could go. When reached the ground,he told her mother what had happened. She was very happy and called Jack,”Brave Boy”. They sold the eggs which the hen laid. And they lived happily.
Sometime after this,Jack climbed the beanstalk again. He go to the castle. This time he dared not let the ogre’s wife see him. So he waited for some hours. Then he got in and hid himself in the broom closet.
When the ogre came home he said,”Fee,fi,fo,fum. I smell the blood of an Englishman! Be he alive or be he dead I’ll grind the bones to be my bread.”
“Oh,no!”said his wife. “You always think there is someone in the house. Now,I know you are wrong.
When the ogre had eaten his dinner,he called for his harp. His wife set it on the table. At a word from the ogre, the harp play by it self. This is so pleased. Jack wanted the harp very much.
As soon as the ogre was sleep,Jack jumped up. He took the harp and ran out of the room. But the harp called out,”Master! Master!”
The ogre woke up. He ran after Jack! The beanstalk seemed a long way off. But Jack would not give up. Closer and closer came the giant. Faster and faster ran Jack. After Jack reached the beanstalk he climbed down very quickly. By the time he reached the ground and the ogre was halfway down.
Jack said,”Mother ,bring the axe! The ogre’s coming!”
The giant’s roars filled the air.
“Hurry mother, hurry!”said Jack. “The giant almost upon us!”
Out ran Jack’s mother with the axe. Jack took it and cut the beanstalk right through with a single blow. The ogre fell down with a crash. And that was the end of his life.
Jack and his mother lived happy many years after that. When Jack grew up he fell in love with a beutiful princess and married her. By that time he was a rich man. His deeds had made him famous.
